The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location was good, and the check-in process was easy. Could improve: The room was not very comfortable, and the facilities could be improved.

We stayed 4 nights at Casa Umoja. It is an authentic place, but it looks old fashioned . Inside the compound it is quiet, but at night one can hear the music from the surrounding bars and restaurants. We liked the short walking distance to the beach and the family room, which gives space for 5 people. The breakfast was delicious and the staff helpful. Could improve: It would be good to provide electricity during blackouts, which happen in Zanzibar regularly. The Hotel does not have a generator, and it is not using solar power, not even solar lamps for security. In general the security is lacking. The main gates are all day open and there was no security guard, who protects the compound, besides some dogs, which are not really guarding. Zanzibar is still a poor island, and along the beach one can see many people who take drugs and suffer from alcohol abuse. We did not feel safe at nights.
