The room was fine, wifi usually worked so-so, also air con and fan. Nice host. I liked the location, right next to the market were I could buy fresh fruit, veggies and local spices. Easy to walk from the apartment to the old town. Mosquito net around the bed. Could improve: Air con and fan in my room were both too loud. There was no electricity at my arrival for maybe 2 hours so I was sweating like crazy at mid-day (that means no fan, no air con, no wifi, too). Very little water in the shower. Way too many mosquitoes, I was bitten up all the time, they were inside the mosquito net around the bed as well and I sletp nothing my first night there. They only did something about mosquitoes and sprayed my room after I told them a few times. It took half a day. I asked twice about it and was told that it is possible to get by car right in front of the aparment. But it's not true, you cannot pass from the main road by car through the market street. Straight after my arrival I cleaned my plastic boxes and very expensive special knife I use only to cut my fresh fruit (I'm vegan) and left them dry up in the shared kitchen. After I got back from outside, my things were all dirty and some were not even there which is not ok and then I was told it was other guests using them by mistake. Kitchen is very old, many things are not working. It was also very loud there at night, both from the street (music, people shouting at the street) and also the people inside the apartment. I felt very confused about other people there and did not feel safe there. There were always different people in the common living room and kitchen, and they did not look like guests but locals. First of all, I do not think they should be there at all, and second, they were really loud both nights there talking and watching TV/listening to music. The first night until 3am until I went to complain, and the second night until 00:30am and stopped again only when I went to tell them. This is really bad if strangers who are not even paying for the accommodation are there and loud and don't let the paying guests sleep. If I wanted the spend the night at the party, I would go to a bar/disco and not pay for a room!

Spacious apartment on the 2nd floor of a building in the old part of Stone Town (2 bedrooms, each with the aircon, 2 bathrooms, 2 balconies, kitchen with the fridge and gas stove), dining room, comfortable beds. The hosts were friendly, and helped us with the luggage, they live next door on the same floor, we felt safe. Good location, everything is close once you get used to finding ways in Stone Town (which took us half a day). BTW, Stone Town is not a labyrinth, as some describe it --it is a very logical network of narrow streets, which always end at another street (thus never closed-ended, like in a maze), and make shade so it's not prohibitively hot for walking even in the middle of the (regularly) hot day. Could improve: Huge problems with electricity, power outages frequent and long -- some out of the hosts' control, some because the apartment electricity connection (contract with the utility) is a sort of pre-paid abonnement (we never before experienced such thing), and every little (particularly including in the middle of the night) electricity was cut off because the money at the account was spent (aircons working)... until it was paid-up. One time (at 3 a.m.) I had to wake up the hosts, one of them asked us for money for that (apparently he had not of his own), the other promised to give it back (because electricity is included in the cost of the rent), but he didn't (never mind, not a big deal). Beware that for a tourist, no electricity means no aircon, and that feels like being suffocated and cooked alive at the same time. Also, one of the two aircones is noisy beyond tolerable (when it works). Earplugs are a must if one wants to sleep The level of cleanliness is poor, my wife cleaned everything when we arrived. Very basic kitchen facilities (fortunately we had ours).. In one of the bathrooms, there was a foul sewage smell.
